That Important Yellow Card

This morning I went to the travel clinic to get my yellow fever immunization. The nurse was very kind, and had great things to say about the Messiah nurses she worked with in the past at Hershey Medical Center. The the doc came in for a quick consult and when he asked my about my trip, he said, "Oh! Are you going with Wanda? She's a doll!" He knows Wanda and her brother Phil (doctor at the Malaria Research Institute at Macha) and the Spurriers who have served many years at the mission in Zambia.

I was amazed at how small the world can seem and how much comfort I take in the connections that exist between the two worlds we're bridging in two days. So, I'm to say hello to Wanda from Sal at Holy Spirit, and I'm stapling my yellow card to my passport per the nurse's advice.

Experiences Become Part of You

My name is Susan and I'll be traveling with the nursing students to Macha, Zambia, in just a few days. I spent a few weeks there in the summer of 2006 with a youth mission team. We painted classrooms at the school, and did some ministry with the children there.

We left behind reminders of our visit--clean, fresh walls, and words of encouragement. But I'm sure we brought home more than we left. We were all changed by the beauty of the people of Zambia.

It makes my heart glad to be able to return to this part of Africa where God showed me so many wonderful things. The experiences of this trip will give us more than memories-- they will change us, become part of who we are.

There is a reason we are going. There is something in this trip for us, there is something in this trip for them. And it may have a lot to do with us not thinking about "us" and "them" any longer.
